Frogs Snakes Insects
There are about 148 species of frogs in Costa Rica. Frogs are most active at night and play an important role in the rain forest ecosystem by acting as predators to insects and prey for other animals. We saw six species of frogs, shown below: The vibrant Red-eyed Tree Frog, the Blue-jeans Poison Dart Frog, the Hourglass Tree Frog, the Red-webbed Tree Frog, and the Tiger Leaf Frog.
We saw one reptile, the Eyelash Pit Viper, which is a venomous snake species found in Costa Rica's wet forests, known for the unique modified scales above its eyes that resemble eyelashes.
I captured photos of three insect species (of the 300,000 known to reside in Costa Rica): the Arrow Shaped Micrathena (spider), the Leaf Mimicking Praying Mantis, which have wide, leaf-shaped body parts to blend into their surroundings, and the well-named Stick Insect, which also blends well into their environment.
